Sanford And Son (Season 5) DVD Review

Nominated for six Golden Globes and seven Emmys, including Outstanding Series - Comedy, Sanford & Son became one of the first shows in television history to be almost entirely centered around African-American characters. Modeled after the British TV show Steptoe & Son, the series showcased the underappreciated talents of comic genius Redd Foxx (whose skin color and bad language prevented him from becoming a superstar decades earlier). The brainchild of All In The Family creator Norman Lear, Sanford & Son signaled the beginning of a decade of sitcom classics for the prolific 1970’s TV writer - Maude (1972), Good Times (1974), and The Jeffersons (1975) being the others. Wrought with memorable one-liners and well-timed humor, Sanford & Son was a Top 10 Nielsen rated show every year in which it aired except for its final season (ranking a respectable #27)

Sanford & Son, set in the Watts district of Los Angeles, follows the life of Fred Sanford (Redd Foxx), a 65-year-old African-American junk dealer who shares his business with his 34-year-old son Lamont (Demond Wilson). With Fred’s wife Elizabeth having passed away twenty years earlier, he often evokes Lamont’s sympathy by clutching his heart and proclaiming, “Oh, I’m coming to join you Elizabeth!” But Fred always survives those near fatal heart attacks, continuing to disperse sarcastic putdowns (often directed at his sister-in-law Esther) and racist stereotypical remarks aimed against whites and Hispanics (especially Lamont’s friend Julio). Using guilt to manipulate his ambitious son into staying and helping run the salvage shop instead of pursuing other endeavors, Fred Sanford spends most of his days lounging around the house (his junk store and home are one and the same) and hanging out with his friends - Grady, Melvin, and Bubba Well-written and hilarious, Sanford & Son is comedian Redd Foxx at his absolute best

The Sanford & Son (Season 5) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere “Earthquake II” in which Fred wakes up believing the house was robbed only to find out that a small earthquake hit in the middle of the night. When Grady tells him that a “big one” is coming soon, Fred gets fed up and vows to sell the house. He travels to Las Vegas to avoid the earthquake, where he runs into Merv Griffin Other notable episodes from Season 5 include “Donna Pops the Question” in which Donna receives a marriage proposal from another man, but wants to know first if Fred will marry her, and “Can You Chop This?” in which Fred invests all of his and Lamont’s money in a get rich quick scheme involving the sale of choppers

The Benefits of Laddering Your CD Investments

If you’ve decided to stock some money away in a certificate of deposit, why not reap the highest benefit over time by laddering your CD investments? What’s a CD latter? I’m glad you asked.

A CD ladder is made up by purchasing several CD’s at one time with different maturity dates. One example of a CD ladder is to have maturity dates of one year, two year, three year, four year, and a five year CD. These five investments make up the rungs of your CD ladder with one certificate maturing every year for the next five years.

For example, let’s say you had $10,000.00 to invest. You would buy 5 CD’s for $2,000 each with each one invested for one year more than the first. So you’d have a $2,000 CD maturing in one year, another in two years, and so on up to the last one which matures in five years. Every year for the next five years one of your CD matures and earns you interest on your $2000 principal.

When your certificate of deposit matures, you roll it over into another CD. The best strategy is to purchase a new CD at the longest term, which in our example above would be five years. This strategy allows you to take advantage of the higher rates normally associated with longer-term CDs while maintaining more frequent access to part of your funds.

Another advantage to laddering your CD’s is that over time it evens out the high and low interest rate cycles. Some years interest rates will be high, other years the rates will be lower. Currently banks are paying some of the highest CD rates we’ve seen in the last decade.

Before deciding on laddering your CD’s, make sure you can afford to do without that money for a period of time. You’ll pay a penalty for withdrawing your funds before your CD reaches maturity.

Also, don’t get stuck on the idea that you have to invest in a 5-year ladder. You may be more comfortable with a three year ladder based on your financial needs. Or you may want to try a ladder with a 3 month, a 6 month, a 12 month, and a 24 month maturity.

The benefits of laddering your CD investment is that you lower your risk of losing money when rates are low, increase your returns when rates are high, and still have access to a portion of your money should you need it for an emergency.

Corporate CD Copiers

CD copiers are frequently used by companies to make CDs of their presentations and seminars. Movie and music companies also use copiers to manufacture CDs in bulk. Increasingly, medium- to large-sized companies are seeking more effective methods for the distribution of information, be it training manuals, marketing information, or company brochures. There is a wide range of corporate CD copiers available on the market, which includes automated CD and DVD publishing systems that can deliver fast, effective, and reliable duplication that enables anyone in the office to make professional looking disc presentations.

The lower end versions of corporate CD copiers typically include machines with a clever robotic mechanism that automatically drops discs from the input bin into the waiting burner drive, one by one. Once copying is complete, the robotic arm will lift the burnt disc from the drive and place it onto the output spindle. If for any reason a disc does not copy accurately, maybe due to a faulty disc, the copier will automatically drop it into the reject bin. Users are assured of quality copies time after time.

The higher end corporate CD copiers include a 12 drive auto-loading copier in which five 220 capacity spindles are based on a revolving turntable holding a total of 1100 discs. A second turntable is present that acts as the output hopper. As each individual spindle is emptied, the turntable will automatically revolve around to the next full spindle. There is no user intervention required, other than for loading blank media and unloading the completed duplication job. Such machines produce up to 1100 duplicates of the original (master) CD without requiring replenishment. These machines also have a facility wherein multiple master CDs can be duplicated unattended.

Working at up to 32 times faster than the normal writing speeds, these machines are capable of producing approximately 200 CD-R’s per hour. Smaller capacity masters result in higher throughput rates per hour. These second generation copiers are an industrial strength precision engineered system with an amazing capacity for “on demand” CD duplication requirements.

Thus, for many requirements, such as getting business cards, music, or presentations on CDs, corporate CD copiers are not just an available option, but a necessity.
